Please note that you require the .NET Framework 4.0 or higher (Mono 2.8.1 or higher).
These are the additional dependencies that you require in addition to the openBVE main program. Please extract the Tao and SDL libraries to your install directory. All other items are installers which you have to download and then execute.
By default, userdata is stored in a directory specific to your operating system. The userdata directory contains your settings and any add-ons you have downloaded through the game. In order to find out where your userdata directory is by default, or in case you want to customize its location, please see
here. If you simply want to store all userdata in the install directory, download the following patch and extract it to your install directory:

If you run into problems during the installation process, please read the installation instructions for
Windows
or for
Linux/Mac
again. Some common problems are also listed in the
Troubleshooting
section.
The next step for you is to browse through the
Install and Play
pages. You can find valuable information there such as the keyboard assignment and a general overview on how to operate trains.
If you ever want to update openBVE to the latest available version, you only need to download the main program again - not the dependencies - and extract it to your existing install directory (overwriting existing files in the process).
There are also plenty of legacy add-ons, particularly for BVE Trainsim, that can also be used but must be found and installed manually. Some authors of such add-ons make it easy for you by providing a single archive that just needs to be extracted somewhere, while others make it very complicated. You have to read
the folder structure for legacy routes and trains
before even considering to install such add-ons.
Here you can find some logos in different shapes and sizes for integration into webpages, among other things.
